Recommendations from Berend Lange

BlueCrane TranslationsOn this page I have some recommendations for you in case you do your own translation from English to German occasionally or edit text in either language.

I collect links to useful online resources here that I use as a professional translator myself which you may find to be of benefit, too.

First and foremost, here are three of the best free online dictionaries I know :

The LEO Online Dictionary

The BEOLINGUS Online Dictionary

dict.cc English/German Dictionary

Why three different dictionaries? Depending on what sort of translation I do, they provide slightly different vocabulary on the various search terms I perform.

All three are simple and quick to use, though. The LEO seems to become the industry standard for professional translation not only for German, but other languages as well.

And then, here is a little gem for you if you are a more discerning user of English, or an active learner :

UsingEnglish.com

You can search and find thousands of 'English Idioms' with an explanation of their meaning here. You'll have to register with a username and password on this website, but it is also free of charge.

What's more, it offers some very interesting and entertaining tools for learning, among them about 100 different online quizzes for 'Beginner English' and 'Intermediate English' on various subjects that you can perform as often as you like.

At the end of each there is immediate feedback on the mistakes you made ... and the correct answer.

I'll add more recommendations to this page as and when I find them and would be grateful for any pointers from you in this direction :

Marianne Williamson about self-worth in her book'Return to Love':

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves: 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?'
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God! Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

This quote is often attributed toNelson Mandela- he is supposed to have said that in hisinaugural speech as President of South Africain May 1994. But I lived in South Africa at the time and heard his speech live : it is not true.

I translate this quote as follows :

“WE ALL HAVE DREAMS … We all want to believe deep down in our souls that we have a special gift, that we can make a difference, that we can touch others in a special way, and that we can make the world a better place. At one time in our lives, we all had a vision for the quality of life that we desire and deserve. Yet, for many of us, those dreams have become so shrouded in the frustration and routines of daily life that we no longer even make an effort to accomplish them. For far too many, the dream has dissipated - and with it, so has the will to shape our destinies. Many have lost that sense of certainty that creates the winner’s edge.”

About Berend Lange - Translation English http://www.bluecranetranslations.com/about-berend-lange.htm Berend Langehttp://www.bluecranetranslations.com/about-berend-lange.htm

Berend LangeAbout Berend Lange

I am glad that you want to know more about me before you proceed, thank you. I would have done the same.

My name is Berend Lange and I am German, but most people think that I am a native speaker of English as well.

As a teenager I discovered that I have a talent for languages and during my first student exchange in England I learned that speaking their language well was key to really becoming acquainted with the locals and British culture.

Fortunately, I have never lost that curiosity.

Germany

I was born and raised in northern Germany, though and have lived in Hamburg initially. Having done my military service, I chose a profession on the commercial side of international transport and joined a well-known shipping company, was sent to London for about two years to work in international shipping policy, got hired back to Hamburg and then delegated to South Africa.

From South Africa to Austria

What a fascinating continent, what a beautiful country! My wife and I stayed for more than 22 years but we have recently moved back from Cape Town to Europe and now live in Austria's Carinthia region, in Villach to be more specific. That's very close to the Italian border - guess where we go for lunch when we want to have a good pizza.

We are a fairly international family and used to spread over four continents, now only three. For a few years, Ihave worked independently as a translator and texterin marketing and public relations now.

BlueCrane TranslationsI have always done that in both German and English and it doesn't matter much which language I use.

Translation is a daily habit and I find it very rewarding to help companies with advertising, marketing and correspondence when they operate or expand internationally.

Therefore, if you are looking for someone you can personally work with, please contact me from here.

If you want any text in German for private or business purposes, you won't regret that - you'll have my full attention and expertise, I assure you :

Editing German Text - Make Sure it is Authentichttp://www.bluecranetranslations.com/editing.htm Berend Langehttp://www.bluecranetranslations.com/editing.htm

Editing German text -make sure it is authentic

BlueCrane TranslationsEditing and proofreading a German translation is necessary to make sure that it reads authentically and correctly, as if the text was written in German from the outset.

To this day I am still surprised to find so much published material with mistakes in it, especially on the internet.

OK, we all slip up sometimes. But a lot of copy I see has obviously been written by German native speakers in great haste, or been translated from another language by non-experts.

The result can be really embarrassing and mistakes like that should certainly not happen in any material that is related to business.

Maybe you speak German very well and write or translate your own text. Nobody is perfect, though and it makes a lot of sense to have it checked and edited by a second pair of eyes.

What should YOU check?

Anyone can do a computerized check for spelling and grammar these days, but is that enough? Are you really sure about ...

  1. Syntax?
  2. Verbalization?
  3. Content?
  4. Sentence Structure?
  5. Consistent Design?
  6. Fluent Presentation?
  7. Clear choice of words?

There is always more than one way to phrase anything and if you want to publish it, it's worth looking at the alternatives. Languages are full of subtle local differences that not even native speakers are always aware of ... but they can make or break your message.

Have a look at this :

Editing text after it has been written therefore makes sense and is not a sign of mistrust in the capabilities of the author - most of my own translation projects for example get checked and revised before they are published, with good reason.

When I write or translate, I am deeply buried in the subject and identify with it ... a good editor will read the page from a different perspective later; he is more detached and has an overview of the whole story that will almost inevitably result in improvements.

Do yourself a favour, let me work on your German text before you publish it :contact me from here.

If you first want to see some examples of how I edit and deal with text : pay a visit to my archive ofBilingual Quotesor read this article in English on my KOMPASS website.

Pricing for Translation and Editing of English and German Texthttp://www.bluecranetranslations.com/pricing.htm Berend Langehttp://www.bluecranetranslations.com/pricing.htm

Pricing for translation, editing and proofreading of text

BlueCrane TranslationsPricing of translation and editing text is pretty competitive, especially when the English language is involved : there are about 380 million native speakers in the world, plus an estimated 600 million who speak it as a second language.

English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. However, about 100 million people consider German to be their mother tongue, whilst another 20 million learned to speak it later in life.

My charges for translation and editing of text for business and private clients are based on the number of sourcewords that you give me to work with. I can't give you a single price for all the work I do, though because text comes in many variations and degrees of difficulty.

What sort of text do YOU need?

I distinguish between

1. creative marketing text like websites, brochures or press releases,
2.
technical text for specific industries like trade or production,
3.
general commercial text for business purposes, and
4.
general private text for all non-commercial communication.

Why do I charge differently in these four categories? Because it takes longer and requires more care to translate text where every word counts than general information that just has to be clear, convincing and flow along nicely.

If you want to get an idea about how much you would have to pay for the text you have in mind to be translated, edited or proofread please fill in this form and my autoresponder will send you an eMail with all the relevant figures right away :

If you don't receive the eMail for some reason, please contact me from here.

I'll see to it that the source text is conveyed into the target language in a way that reads like an original text - you want to get your message across, your text to work. In the age of global communication, your success depends on the convincing portrayal of your ideas and products.

And this is valid not only in the corporate world : the other day I translated an interview for a British school-project about the different fashions and lifestyles for teenagers in Germany and the UK - there was no more room for cultural misunderstandings after that, believe me.

Whatever it is that you can say in English, let me do it for you in German :contact me from here.

Press Release
Official Language for European Union:
English or German?
“Euro-English” is the answer!

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby the European Unionas a whole will have an official language soon, and it will be Englishrather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as “Euro-English”.

In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of “k”. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced with “f”. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent “e” in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” with “z” and “w” with “v”.

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary “o” kan be dropd from vords kontaining “ou” and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl.

A good Translation of Marketing Text
must be professional and unique ... just like you !

Your brochures and websites have to be translated from English intoGerman because now you want to specificallymarket your products and services inGermany, Austria and Switzerland - countrieswith enormous buying power.

BlueCrane TranslationsYou want to expand, are ambitious and have something importantto say...but how do you get your message across authenticallyin the German-speaking world?Your proposition is uniqueand you want to make sure that it isperfectly understood.

After all, as a professional in your field of activity you have seen more than enough marketing text that was worded awkwardly or even had crude errors in it.

That does more damage than good!

Your own knowledge of the German language is probably not sufficient for a really good translation, you don't have anyone qualified enough for that in your company either- and you don't have the time to do everything yourself anyway.

At BlueCrane Translations you'll find tailor-made helpto haveyour marketing text translated into German professionally by a native speaker so that your unique products and services are offered abroad authentically.

My name isBerend Lange, I am German and a freelance translator, have worked commercially in English-speaking countries for more than 24 years and now live in Austria.

What exactly are you looking for ?

If you don't speak German at all you need a complete Translation. SomeEditing will probably do if your German is just a bit rusty or if you have a draft translation already, whileProofreading is enough to make sure your German text is OK technically.

My special area of expertise is the translation of marketing text for commercial websites, brochures, advertisements, articles, presentations, speeches and press releases.

BlueCrane TranslationsI have also made a name for myself as a translator of philosophical texts for personal development and regularly publish my own articles - here is an example : 'The truth about the Flying Dutchman'.Maybe you are also active in this field and I can help you spreadthese ideas in the German-speaking world.

The German-speaking markets with their immense buying power areindispensablemarketing targetsfor any company these days - and yet I see many websites that either don't offer any German text at all, or do so with crude errors in it. That way, you don't have a chance here.

But there is more - in order to spark an interest in your offeryou need to understand our European mentality and approach your prospects in a way they are familiar with.German is my mother tongue, I grew up here and I live here ... believe me, I understand the Germans and I know how to talk to them !

At BlueCrane, you're dealing directly with me personally, not with an agency or a big organization.I work efficiently and my rates are reasonable because I want you to come back with more work when you are happy with my first job.

Go easy on yourself - have your message worded by an expert. Avoid embarrassing mistakes and enjoy the confidence of accurate, convincing text in your documents.

You can afford that : the alternative will cost you a lot more dearly!

Any doubts ?
